This hydraulic power steering rack (OE 1J1422062D) is a direct replacement for the original steering gear found in the Volkswagen Bora sedan, built on the A4 (PQ34) platform from 1999 onwards. Complete Power Steering System Check

Before installing a new steering rack on your Bora, inspect the entire power steering system for related wear. The high-pressure hose from the pump to the rack is a common failure point on A4 platform VWs — the rubber section near the rack fitting deteriorates from engine heat and can burst without warning. The power steering reservoir filter screen should be checked for debris; metal particles indicate pump wear that could contaminate your new rack. The return hose from the rack to the reservoir should be soft and pliable — if it feels hard or brittle, replace it to prevent cracking and leaks after reassembly.

Installation Torque Specifications

For proper installation on the VW Bora A4 platform: Rack mounting bracket bolts — 45 Nm (33 ft-lb). Steering column intermediate shaft pinch bolt — 30 Nm (22 ft-lb). Power steering pressure line fitting — 40 Nm (30 ft-lb). Power steering return line fitting — 30 Nm (22 ft-lb). Outer tie rod castle nut — 50 Nm (37 ft-lb), then continue to next split pin hole. Always use a new split pin on the tie rod castle nut — never reuse the old one. After installation, turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock at least 10 times with the engine off to purge air from the system before starting the engine.
